{"id":98,"date":"2008-08-06T07:51:14","date_gmt":"2008-08-06T11:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/2008\/08\/06\/use-foldershare-to-share-sync-files\/"},"modified":"2008-08-06T07:51:14","modified_gmt":"2008-08-06T11:51:14","slug":"use-foldershare-to-share-sync-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/tech-blog\/2008\/08\/06\/use-foldershare-to-share-sync-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Use FolderShare to Share &#038; Sync Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the must-have apps that&#8217;s installed on all my Windows machines (plus there&#8217;s also a Mac version) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foldershare.com\/\">Windows Live FolderShare<\/a>, which enables you to automatically share and synchronize files and folders across the Internet (and access them from anywhere).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foldershare.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/foldershare.gif\" alt=\"FolderShare\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>FolderShare is free, peer-to-peer file sharing &#8212; or self-to-self file sharing, as the case may be. I use it both ways.<\/p>\n<p>As noted on the FolderShare Web site, use the app to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>  Keep files in sync across your computers.<\/li>\n<li>Share folders with friends.<\/li>\n<li>Access your files from any computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, the concept is so simple, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foldershare.com\/learnmore.aspx\">learn more<\/a> page is incredibly concise. Additionally, FolderShare is a simple way to ensure that your most important files are always backed up on at least one other machine.<\/p>\n<p>Getting FolderShare set up is super-easy. Here&#8217;s all you have to do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foldershare.com\/clientdownload.aspx\">Install<\/a> the small app (it&#8217;ll always run in the background).<\/li>\n<li>Create an account.<\/li>\n<li>Specify a folder whose contents you want to synchronize.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat on other computers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are some ways I use FolderShare for both work and personal stuff:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Group shares for files we want to share with everyone (doubles as backup on colleagues&#8217; machines since if your machine crashes, files are still on the machines of others)<\/li>\n<li>Project notes and documentation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.articulate.com\/products\/presenter.php\">Articulate Presenter<\/a> project share (see Method 2 of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.articulate.com\/blog\/articulate-101-presenter-project-sharing-backup-and-foldershare\/\">Word of Mouth blog entry<\/a> on the topic)<\/li>\n<li>Screenshots (I take lots of screenshots for blog entries, supporting customers, etc., so I like to have access to my screenshots across all machines)<\/li>\n<li>Daily software builds (so that our dev, QA, and support teams always have access to latest versions of products in development)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Personal:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Private share (for a quick and dirty way to share files between laptop &amp; desktop)<\/li>\n<li>My RoboForm Data (sync your <a href=\"http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/2008\/02\/03\/use-roboform-to-manage-your-passwords-more\/\">RoboForm<\/a> data folder so you always have latest logins,SafeNotes, etc. on all of your computers)<\/li>\n<li>Quicken (ensure my latest financial data is always present and backed up on all of my computers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/snag-1611.png\" alt=\"FolderShare screenshot\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All that and once you install it, it just works &#8212; automatically in the background.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the must-have apps that&#8217;s installed on all my Windows machines (plus there&#8217;s also a Mac version) is Windows Live FolderShare, which enables you to automatically share and synchronize files and folders across the Internet (and access them from anywhere).
