If I&#8217;m downloading a large file, especially, I don&#8217;t need to watch the status. I&#8217;d rather get back to work on other stuff and I certainly don&#8217;t need to see this window:<\/p>\n<p><center><img src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/snag-1525.png' alt='Firefox Download window' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Hiding this status window is as easy as 1, 2, 3 (4, 5):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open up a new tab in Firefox (control-T, as you might recall from my earlier post on <a href=\"http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/2008\/03\/21\/firefox-tab-tips\/\">Firefox shortcuts<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>about:config<\/strong> into the address bar and hit Enter.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Filter <\/strong>field at the top, type <strong>download<\/strong>:\n<p><img src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/snag-1526.png' alt='download filter' \/><\/li>\n<li>Look for the option called <strong>browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting<\/strong> (you can also filter for exactly that phrase).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Double-click<\/strong> that option and the value will change to <strong>false<\/strong>:\n<p><img src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/snag-1527.png' alt='browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting' \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!
