If you have a Gmail address or Google account, you probably already know about Google Docs. My wife and I have used it for years to safely store our contact list online &#8212; and we can both easily add or edit addresses. <\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/\"><img border=0 src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/google_logo_docs.gif' alt='google_logo_docs.gif' \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I volunteer for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalpreservationhall.org\/\">UPH Saratoga<\/a> and we&#8217;re working to plan a big fundraiser event in a couple weeks (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.universalpreservationhall.org\/UPHUniversity.htm\">UPH University<\/a>). Someone asked in our <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/\">Google Groups<\/a> discussion list yesterday if we were tracking the names of our &#8220;professors&#8221; and their guests to whom we had offered complimentary tickets. We weren&#8217;t, so I decided to take the initiative. <\/p>\n<p>I went to create a new Google spreadsheet and noticed a cool new feature that would perfectly suit our purpose: <strong>Form Collection<\/strong>. One of the drawbacks of Google Docs has always been that in order for someone to collaborate with you, she has to be signed into her Google account, too. This new feature is pretty cool because you can now solicit and collect data from people without their having to be signed into or even owning a Google Account. <\/p>\n<p>Using it is really easy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/\">Google Docs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>New <\/strong>-> <strong>Spreadsheet <\/strong>to create your new spreadsheet:\n<p><img src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/snag-1752.png' alt='snag-1752.png' \/><\/li>\n<li>Add some rows for the type of data you want to collect (e.g., name &#038; job title).<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Share <\/strong>tab in the upper-right corner.<\/li>\n<li>If you haven&#8217;t already done so, you&#8217;ll be prompted to <strong>save your spreadsheet<\/strong> with a name.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Invite people<\/strong> and select the radio button <strong>to fill out a form<\/strong>:\n<p><img src='http:\/\/gabeanderson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/snag-1751.png' alt='snag-1751.png' \/><\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Preview and send form<\/strong> button, which launches a new window.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm or edit your existing column names, or select the link to <strong>Add a new question<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the button to <strong>Preview and send<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Optionally, send the link to your form as an email &#8212; or just copy the link.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/viewform?key=p3401qgf3_XZhsVLsQ2FICA&#038;email=true\">view the sample input form<\/a> I created right here:<\/p>\n<p><form action=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/formResponse?key=p3401qgf3_XZhsVLsQ2FICA\" method=\"POST\"><div class=\"ss-form-entry\"><span class=\"ss-q-title\">First Name<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span class=\"ss-q-help\"><\/span>\r\n<input type=\"text\" class=\"ss-q-short\" name=\"single:2\" \/><\/div> <div class=\"ss-form-entry\"><span class=\"ss-q-title\">Last Name<\/span>\r\n<span class=\"ss-q-help\"><\/span>\r\n<input type=\"text\" class=\"ss-q-short\" name=\"single:1\" \/><\/div> <div class=\"ss-form-entry\"><span class=\"ss-q-title\">Job Title<\/span>\r\n<span class=\"ss-q-help\"><\/span>\r\n<input type=\"text\" class=\"ss-q-short\" name=\"single:0\" \/><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<input type=\"submit\" value=\"Submit\" \/><\/form>\r\n<span class=\"ss-powered-by\">powered by Google Docs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Optionally, you can even click the <strong>Publish<\/strong> tab to give people the link to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/spreadsheets.google.com\/pub?key=p3401qgf3_XZhsVLsQ2FICA\">view your spreadsheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, you may have noticed that I embedded the form directly in this blog entry.
